Feature and Follow Friday

Time once again for Feature and Follow Friday, an awesome weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee  and Alison Can Read  designed to help book bloggers meet and connect. This weeks all-important question is: If you could read a book for the “first time” again, which book would it be? Why? Even though it probably feels a bit dated now (as it was first published in 1993,) I would choose Tomorrow When the War Began by John Marsden. This one has so many amazing twists and turns as the lead characters fight to defend their country against invading forces. The heroine Ellie is not only a very strong young woman, but she is amazingly resourceful. I think a lot of modern YA heroines could take a leaf out of her book. The second book I would choose is one of my all-time favourites, Oliver Twist . I was amazed by just how different the book is to its most famous film adaption. It's actually quite dark. It surprised me that anyone could make a musical out of some of the subject ma...

Follow & Feature Friday

It's Follow & Feature Friday once again, that awesome time of week where like-minded bloggers can meet and connect.  Hosted by  Parajunkie's View  and  Alison Can Read , Feature & Follow Friday is a weekly blog hop. This week's all important question is: Q: What is one thing you wish you could tell your favorite author? Hmm. You know, there is an episode of Doctor Who titled the Unquiet Dead where the Ninth Doctor and Rose go back in time and meet Charles Dickens. Being a Dickens fan myself, I rather enjoyed the episode and also the conversation that the Doctor told Dickens what he thought of his books. The look on Dickens' face when the Doctor told him what he thought of The Old Curiosity Shop, (arguably, Dickens' worst book,) was one of horror and disgust. I think if I were to meet the (real) Dickens', I'd probably end up accidentally doing the same thing, and just cause a whole lot of annoyance. So maybe its best if I didn'...

A wonderful fact to reflect upon, that every human creature is constituted to be that profound secret and mystery to every other. ~ Charles Dickens

Happy 200th Birthday, Mr Dickens

Tomorrow it will be two hundred years since the birth of one of my favourite authors, Charles Dickens. For those of you who don't know, Dickens was born in Portsea, and grew up to become one of the greatest (if not the greatest) authors of his generation. Dickens was the author of some of my favourite novels, including Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities  and A Christmas Carol. Much of his work has been made into BBC dramas at some point, while Oliver Twist  and A Christmas Carol  have enjoyed many weird and wonderful adaptions over the years - in one adaption of A Christmas Carol, Disney's Uncle Scrooge plays Ebenezer, leaving other major Disney characters to play the other roles. In another adaption , Kermit the frog and his Muppet co-stars play the leads. Oliver Twist  was adapted into a stage play and musical titled Oliver! which leaves out most of the violence, as well as Oliver's half brother, Monks.  Dickens died on the 9th of June, 1870. He was laid to r...
